Luke 17:11-19
11¶And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
12And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
13And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
Due to the contagious nature of leprosy, those afflicted were required to stand a fair distance away from those who were "clean." By calling Jesus by name, they have at least heard of Him and His power to heal.
14And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
" . . . as they went, they were cleansed." In some cases the people were required to perform longer tasks to be healed. In this case all they needed to do was obey and go see the priest. From this scripture it appears that they were cleansed before they reached the priest. I think sometimes we just need to show that we are on the right path and we will be blessed even before we obtain our goal.
15And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
One man turned back. I would think that the others were grateful too, but in their joy all they could see was the desire to share it with those they loved. One man remembered the Savior, who was the author of the joy and turned back to Him.
16And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
17And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
18There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
19And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
I have been thinking about the connection between gratitude and faith. The Samaritan returned to give thanks and the Savior blessed him even more because of his faith. I think gratitude is a breeding ground, of sorts, for many other virtues. Is there anything that impresses you as you read this passage again?
